dc.description.abstractIn the 1920s, during the early days of community organization, the national and religious structures of the Armenian community in Syria were established with a strong emphasis on writing in Armenian as a vital means of self-organisation and preservation. Alongside the construction of schools and churches, the Armenian community published informational, historical, scientific, literary, and religious daily newspapers, as well as yearbooks, annual reviews, and children’s magazines. These publications nourished the Armenian mind, instilling knowledge and contributing significantly to the historical and cultural life of the community. After Syria gained independence, particularly following the coup of March 8, 1963, a new state decree mandated that only one state newspaper could be published, effectively halting the production of all other newspapers. As a result, many Armenian intellectuals were forced to leave the country. With the reform movement of 1970, some freedoms were gradually restored, including the reprinting of the press. This allowed for the revival of Armenian print media.
