    OCR / HTR technologies and Armenian Heritage Preservation
    (Հայաստանի ազգային գրադարան / National Library of Armenia, 2023) Vidal-Gorene, Chahan
    OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and HTR (Handwritten Text Recognition) are now ready for Armenian language. This technology may offer a greater valorization for documents by enabling improved accessibility, using by instance keywords search, and consists in a new challenge for Digital Libraries. Our presentation intends to propose a view on what is possible today, by introducing a state-of-the-art of the challenges raised by text recognition for Armenian. A focus will be drawn on the technology developed by Calfa for handwritten archives, ancient manuscripts and old printed books. We will present our feedback on three of our ongoing projects: processing catalogs of manuscripts (Mekhitarist, Venice), printed newspapers of Fundamental Scientific Library of NASRA, and handwritten correspondences (Mekhitarist, Venice). Methodology applied by Calfa leads to an accuracy higher than 95% for handwritten documents and higher than 99,5% for printed documents.

    The state of Armenia’s libraries : present and future

    This article analyzes the results of the National Library of Armenia’s 2021 nationwide library survey, which aimed to measure the current physical, operational and cultural state of Armenia’s libraries. The data is compared with results from library surveys around the world in an attempt to understand Armenia’s place within the global library field. Finally, the article identifies the major gaps in Armenia’s library system and provides recommendations for improvement of the country’s library field moving forward.

    Владельцы личных библиотек и книжная культура Туркестанского края на рубеже XIX - XX веков

    The article is devoted to the owners of personal libraries in the Turkestan region at the turn of the XIX – early XX centuries, who made a significant contribution to the foundation of the Turkestan Public Library and development of book culture in general. The purpose of the article is to consider peculiarities of book culture as well as the owners’ personalities, history of the formation of their personal libraries, the repertoire and the degree of their study. Information about personal libraries and their owners is pro-vided on materials from the collections of rare books and manuscripts of the National Library of Uzbeki-stan and the Fundamental Library of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The author considers Russian personal libraries as an important element of the national and regional book culture of the region.

    Возможности и перспективы использования технологии связанных данных в Президентской библиотеке

    The article discusses approaches to publishing library data of the Presidential Library in the LOD (Linked open data) environment as an integral part of a single digital knowledge space. The basic model of data is built taking into account the specifics of the Presidential Library catalogue: the integrated library cata-logue includes library, archival and museum materials; when building the catalog, the national RUSMARC format is used. The proposed scheme for publishing linked data is based on the transformation of MARC records using the IFLA LRM and RiC-CM conceptual models as well as standard ontologies.

    Интернет-технологии в работе общедоступных библиотек: анализ практики

    The purpose of this article is to introduce into the scientific circulation the results of a research work of the Russian State Library (RSL) with the aim to study use of Internet technologies in the work of public libraries. As result of the research, the main directions of internetization of librarianship were identified and the problems hindering the development of this process were listed. Special attention in the course of the study was paid to the analysis of development of remote user service.

    Культурно-историческое наследие Армении на языках народов мира в фондах Библиотеки иностранной литературы

    The Library for Foreign Literature has carried out work to identify documents thematically related to the cultural and historical heritage of Armenia. More than 500 documents have been identified in 26 languages of the peoples of the world. The rare book collection presents unique publications of European authors of the 17th and 19th centuries about travel, geography and history, linguistics. There are several historical and linguistic books originally from Venice, the city where the national Armenian printing originated in 1512. The recipients of the collected information are libraries of Armenia, Centers of Armenian Studies, Armenian diasporas in Russia and other countries. The library accepts orders for the production of digital copies of paper originals. The multilingual nature of the identified documents and the Library’s multifaceted activities in the fields of cultural diplomacy ensure the promotion of Armenia’s cultural and historical heritage in a broad international context.

    The presentation discusses the issues of organizing services for the formation of the National Library of Uzbekistan’s national bibliographic databases. Among the problems the library faces are the regular replenishment of electronic databases with geosci-ence periodical publications, the compilation of bibliographic retrospective indexes, as well as individual bib-liographic indexes of full-text databases on DVD.

    Проблемы и перспективы организации долговременного сохранения цифрового культурного наследия

    Long-term digital preservation aims to ensure that the digital content of traditional socio-cultural insti-tutions (libraries, museums, archives, etc.) remains accessible to user communities for a long period of time and for future generations. The article considers the problems and prospects of organizing long-term digital storage of electronic information resources. It is proposed to use for solving the problems of long-term digital preservation approaches focused on the reference model of the open archival information system (OAIS), de-scribed in the ISO 14721:2012 standard. To describe events/actions with a document during archival storage, it is proposed to use the PREMIS metadata model.

    Развитие читательских компетенций учащейся молодежи: книжный клуб как инструмент продвижения чтения в вузе

    The article is devoted to the analysis of changes taking place in the practice of reading of modern students. Conclusions about the nature of these changes are based on a survey of young students conducted by the author and on the results of an associative experiment. As a tool for promoting reading at the university, a book club has been proposed, whose activities allow expanding the reading experience of young people and mastering new forms of reading practice. The work of the club effectively complements the educational process and provides new opportunities for intellectual and creative self-expression of students in the educational space of the university.

    The role of libraries in preserving the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples is significant and multi-faceted. Libraries build up collections of information resources in indigenous languages, carry out extensive research work, generate bibliographic databases, conduct cultural and educational activities, organize exhibi-tions. These activities support the preservation and promotion of the local tangible and intangible cultural heritage, the written and spoken indigenous languages. This is aimed at developing young people’s interest and responsible attitude to the languages and cultures of the indigenous peoples of Russia.

    Современные интерфейсы новых медиа как фактор влияния на текст и его восприятие

    User interfaces have evolved greatly in recent decades and have begun to have a significant impact on text and its perception. Most digital content is presented on electronic platforms of the so-called social media. The emergence of new interface tools serves as a tool for the implementation of author’s experiments, taking into account the specifics of the perception of the new generation audience and leads to the transformation of the concepts of “text,” “author,” “reader.” The representation of educational organizations in social networks, their transition to the status of new media serves to popularize culture and preserve traditional values.

    Чтение и библиотека в жизни Ованеса Туманяна

    Tumanyan was one of the most widely read Armenian writers. With the help of self-education, the study of a huge number of scientific and artistic books, the poet, who did not finish school, became publicist, literary critic, and author of scientific research. The proof of Tumanyan’s great love for the book is his personal library of 10.000 items. Tumanyan became a symbol of book giving. The birthday of the great poet, February 19, is enshrined in the history of Armenian culture as the Book Giving Day.

    The article suggests five initiatives for libraries in Armenia to promote learning. • A circle-shaped mother-child reading room, where the child can play with toys and books while the mother reads. Target audience for this project are mothers with children under 3. • Psychologist’s office for library users and personnel (with reg-istration). • During “Library Night” famous literary heroes (performance by actors) will visit the library, inspire readers, and take part in theatrical events. Library users will have a chance to read at night in the library. • Screenings of films based on famous books once a month. • Literary discussions based on previously read literature.

    Thus, we touched upon the Armenian communities of Argentina and Brazil, the Armenian press, as well as the Armenian press of Argentina and Brazil. Under the dictates of historical and political circumstances, Armenians also settled in Brazil and Argentina. They have created their respective community structures, published the Armenian press, etc. This press touches on various issues: community life, Homeland-Diaspora relations, etc. The coverage of the problems of the Armenian press in general is of great relevance. The Armenian press of Argentina and Brazil is also developing activities in the Armenian communities to preserve the Armenian identity, especially among the younger generation, contributes to the preservation of the Armenian language, traditions and customs.

    Artashes Ter-Khachaturyan has significant support in assembling the Armenian periodicals, identifying new titles, researching, publicizing and promoting them. He demonstrated all the qualities specific to the intellectuals of the diaspora: a patient teacher, a skilled organizer and editor, an impartial researcher, an accepted public figure, a visible person who establishes and develops ties with the Motherland. Today, the National Library of Armenia is working on compiling his bibliographic series: Bibliography about the librarian. A small part of Artashes Ter-Khachaturyan՚s personal collection is preserved here: more than 200 valuable books and periodicals. some of them were missing in the library collection.

    Thus, in the context of the cultural heritage of Artsakh, the importance of the mission of libraries was emphasized. Artsakh is known for its writing centers, handwritten magazines, printing houses, published books, press, etc. In different historical periods there were many libraries in Artsakh. Libraries were also severely damaged during the wars, as evidenced by statistics and other data.The role of the National Library of Armenia was great in replenishing the literature of various libraries of Artsakh. A group of library staff held discussion seminars in various libraries of Artsakh. It is important to note that at the initiative of the NLA, work has begun on the Dspace platform to create a database called “The Endangered Heritage of Artsakh.” The website of the Artsakh Electronic Library, which is a project of the association of young scientists and specialists of Artsakh (AYSSA), contains scientific and analytical information about Artsakh., educational and artistic materials in Armenian, Russian and English.

    We briefly touched upon the Armenian-Arab relations, the Armenian community of Lebanon, the Lebanese Armenian press, in particular the daily newspaper “Azdak.” Armenians settled in Lebanon under the dictates of historical and political circumstances. They created their respective community structures, printed the Armenian press and so on. The periodical “Azdak” covers various topics. The Armenian Press database is also available on the website of the National Library of Armenia, which also contains bibliographic data of Armenian periodicals published in Lebanon. There is a link “read online” where digital copies of periodicals are available.

It also plays a big role in popularizing print culture.
